We reckon the Eagle is the best little whore house in London. Seriously, as slut huts go this one ticks many of our favourite boxes – it’s a bar so doesn’t have that sex club pressure. When you have a tart twinge there’s a darkroom most nights and often something good to meet you there. Informal but indecent ...which is what you want from a bar where you can also take your mates for a quiet pint, game of pool or some forward planning for the rest of your night.
On the downside it's...
...often got a bit of an older crowd and we're sometimes surprised it isnt busier. However, given the our paranoia about the demise of our local bar scene, the Eagle (formerly South Central, Dukes…) in Vauxhall calms our nerves. Yes it’s in Vauxhall but it’s got a definite local but not provincial feel about it – thanks to a seven night schedule that includes everything from Boots Only on Tuesdays to Horse Meat Disco on Sundays.
Top rated as our favourite local bar. Nice to start reviews again with somewhere you like.
QUICK LOOK: THE LOWDOWN (include these if you wanna do a review)
Venue: It’s a one storey building on a corner with blacked out windows sex club style. Inside it’s got a big bar in the middle with some seating in one area, darkroom (except Sundays), pool table and a recently done up beer garden that’s really nice.
Attracts: Local(ish) crowd of mainly over 30s.
How many? Capacity of several hundered for Horse Meat but often less than fifty.
Staff: We’ve often described some bar staff as “easily distracted”, “confused”, “unprofessional” and “too chatty when there’s a queue”. Not here. They’re efficient and professional whilst still being friendly. Rare.
Security: Really good. We’ve seen them handle several drunks in the past with proper care – none of that confrontational shit you get in some places that often results in said drunk taking a “well deserved” few knocks. Again, professional.
Where is it? Kennington Lane, Vauxhall. Just down from the RVT. Walk with purpose as there are regular muggings in the area.
Darkroom: Most nights except Sundays and when it's Tonker on Fridays.
Dance: The music’s often brilliant on regular nights but no dancefloor!
