The Fridge is to reopen at the end of August as a “state of the art” music venue. It was bought last year when it went into receivership and has had £1m spent on restorations. The plan is for it to take the place of the Astoria in attracting live music acts like it did during the eighties.

It’s got quit the past. It opened in 1913 as a cinema but got into gay folklore when it was bought in 1985 by Susan Carrington and Andrew Czezowski. It then hosted gigs by everybody from the Pet Shop Boys to Soul II Soul. Perhaps most gay clubbers will always remember it as the home to Love Muscle – a rip roaring club that had more comebacks than
a bad douche.
