43% CUTS TO HIV PREVENTION CLAIMS HIV COALITION

PCTs are to cut the budget for gay men’s HIV prevention work in London by 43%, putting those who are among the most affected by the virus at an even greater risk of transmission. Mark Delacour, Director of Operations at the Consortium[1] said, “if these cuts result in even a handful of men becoming infected with HIV, then the cost of treatment would mean that, at a time of reduced public spending, PCTs won’t have saved the taxpayer a single penny”.

The Pan London HIV Prevention Programme is funded by a group of London PCTs, led by Kensington & Chelsea, and commissions a number of voluntary organisations to tackle the spread of HIV among gay men. On Friday 18 March 2011, these organisations were notified that existing budgets would be cut by 43% from the start of the new financial year in April 2011 and were given two working days to accept or reject the offer.

GMFA GETS TO WORK ON HEP C

Approximately 250,000 to 600,000 people in the UK have Hepatitis C and only 55,000 have been diagnosed, according to treatment activist group HIV i-Base1. That means up to 91% of people with Hepatitis C may be undiagnosed. There have been a growing number of cases of Hepatitis C infection in HIV-positive men, and much of this increase is now understood to be due to sexual transmission2. If left untreated, this can lead to an increased risk of cirrhosis, liver cancer and even premature death.

BEN COHEN - JOCK STRAP TEASE!

Some press release's grab your attention and then sadly don't quite deliver. Sadly, this is one but in a good way.  When we read GMFA's release saying rugger bugger Ben Cohen had signed a jockstrap for the RVT/GMFA Sports Day on Sunday we kinda assumed he'd worn it...  

Knowing folks who've put themselves through drama school selling their used underwear we thought it was the least he could have done!  But good deeds come in small and big packages - what a tease tho perhaps the winner can get him to wear it? Lots more is on offer so read on...

RVT/GMFA SPORTS DAY: NOT TOO LATE TO JOIN IN

Last calls for getting a team together and admitted to this year's RVT GMFA Sports Day. We're told "Sports Day will take place on Bank Holiday Monday 30 August from 1pm to 6pm. We still have a few places left for teams of five people to come along and join in Sports Day and help raise some vital money for three great causes at the same time."

GAY SPORTS DAY 30 AUGUST

Wimbledon and the World cup are so over (unless you're Spanish or Dutch) and it's time to gear up for Gay Sports Day on Monday 30 August. Organized by GMFA and the RVT all proceeds go to GMFA.

GMFA tell us that Channel 4's primetime hit TV series “The Sex Education Show” is returning for a third series and is looking for young people between 16 & 25 for a feature on first love.

HIV LIFE EXPECTANCY

Contrary to assertions made on discodamaged a while ago, new research shows "that people recently diagnosed with HIV, and some of those with high CD4 counts when they begin treatment, are likely to live as long, or nearly as long, as those without HIV". GMFA comment "There are some 32,000 gay men with HIV in the UK and over a quarter of them don’t know they have the virus, which means that they are more likely to get ill. These findings are an important reminder that, if you do have HIV, the sooner you know the better."

The Rose and Crown in Greenwich are auctioning guys and girls and tickets to make you the perfect hot date like dinner or theatre tickets for two. MAKE GMFA YOUR VALENTINE

Four gay bars are supporting GMFA on Valentines weekend. On Saturday 13^th Yard Bar in Soho, Kazbar in Clapham, and The Green in Islington are having Red Party theme nights and on Sunday 14^th Village bar Soho is holding a "Valentine’s Free" event. GMFA volunteers will be rattling buckets at all these events. We put them in the gay London calendar.

ANOTHER SURVEY WITH £50 PRIZE

GMFA is working on a project to help men diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection to inform any sexual partners who may have been exposed to the same infection. ARSE CLASS

GMFA are running their Arse Class again across the UK and with one day only in London on 6th February. "The course will help you ... make fucking more comfortable, how to use sex toys properly, why the arse is a vulnerable area for disease, and which lubes are best for which situation... ". HIV POSITIVE PEOPLE WANTED

The National AIDS Trust is looking for volunteers to take part in a focus group to investigate the psychological needs of people living with HIV. If you're HIV positive and willing to spare one evening Wednesday 20th January, read on.

WORLD AIDS DAY

It's World Aids Day on 1st December and there are lots of collections coming up. Sunday 29th Orange at Fire are donating £1 per customer to the Elton John Foindation; Monday 30th Barcode are supporting the Ian Charleson Day Centre; and Popcorn will be rattling their cans harder at a safe sex ball; Hard sex toys are donating 10% of their profits for two weeks; and GMFA are organizing a  campaign along the lines "Many HIV-negative men believe it’s up to positive men not to infect others, while many HIV-positive men believe HIV-negative men should take responsibility to protect themselves. The truth is we are all responsible for our own health as well as that of our partners." GMFA are collecting at The Eagle on Saturday 28th November, Kazbar, The Green, Kudos, The Edge, The Rose & Crown in Greenwich, Comptons, The Two Brewers, The Royal Vauxhall Tavern. You can't escape, empty your pockets!

£6,735 RAISED FOR CHARITY

The RVT / GMFA Sports Day August 31st raised £6,735 for GMFA, Vauxhall City Farm and the Friends of Spring Gardens! Cheques will be presented at Timberlina's Pub Night Bingo on Monday 26th October.
